Featured Teacher

Sharon Schamber, Payson, AZ
www.sharonschamber.com

Quilt designer, author and teacher, Sharon Schamber has a long history in textiles. She started sewing when she was six years old with her Aunt Joe as her teacher. At the ripe old age of twelve, Sharon started buying clothes from Goodwill so she could take them apart and then sew them together again. For many years she used her creative energies in a successful career designing and making bridal and pageant wear. After retiring from that business in 1994, the quilting bug bit her and ever since she has devoted her energies to designing and making beautiful award winning quilts. Sharon learned to quilt on her own in the middle of the Arizona desert. Her teachers were quilting books, her imagination, and all the childhood memories she could scrounge up of her grandmother quilting in the 1960’s. She was very thankful to discover that we do many things differently today!

Even from the beginning, she always loved appliqué the best. The results that can be achieved are so beautiful that it almost broke her heart when she discovered that this technique was impossible for her to do with traditional methods because of a tremor she inherited from both parents. It has been her joy to develop many techniques that give beautiful hand done results with a sewing machine.

Sharon was named the winner of the Best of Show award at the 2005 Houston International Quilt Festival with her magnificent quilt "Scarlet Serenade". Her "Sedona Rose" quilt won Best of Show at the 2006 AQS Show in Paducah and her "Flower of Life" won Best of Show in 2007-- the first quilter to win the top award two years in a row! Sharon recently has been awarded the title of Master Quilter from the National Quilting Association.

Sharon promises that this is only the beginning. She hopes to continue to inspire her students through both her teaching and her new creations. She promises we will see many new things from her in the future and she can hardly wait to share what is around the corner.

"Small Matters" Challenge: Plan now to participate in this year's Village Quilt Challenge. Stop in Threads of Tradition at Sauder Village for Challenge guidelines and a fabric kit. If you are not able to visit our shop in person, Challenge guidelines and all available challenge fabrics can be viewed on the Challenge web page, and then ordered either by e-mail or telephone. We will gladly ship whatever you need... right to your door. Click here to view the Challenge guidelines and to view the Challenge fabrics.

Pieced:  Piecing predominates over other techniques in amount or effect.

Appliqué:  Appliqué predominates over other techniques in amount or effect.

Mixed Technique:  A quilt where two or more major construction techniques, not including quilting or trapunto, are used to develop the design of the top.

Open Class: Quilting that uses one or more special techniques such as whole cloth, embroidery, cross-stitch, painting or other surface design techniques not included in the categories above.

Baby Quilts: Crib size or smaller quilt that is designed for a young child.

Art / Innovative Quilts: (any size) A contemporary artwork exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns which retains, through materials or technique, a clear relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descends. The work must possess the basic structural characteristics of a quilt. It must be predominantly fabric or fabric-like material and must be composed of at least two full and distinct layers - a face layer and a backing layer. The face and backing layers must be held together by hand- or machine-made functional quilting stitches or other elements that pierce all layers and are distributed throughout the surface of the work.

Miniatures: Scaled down version of a large quilt design.
Total size 400 sq. inches or less.

Youth Quilts: Quilts made by youth ages 18 and younger can be submitted for this special category. Quilt tops must have been sewn by the youth and can be quilted or tied. All other registration guidelines apply. Please note the quilt-maker's age and other interesting information on the entry form. We encourage youth to embrace the art of quilt making and share their developing talents! This category is for exhibit only and will not be judged.

Entry Requirements and Guidelines
All quilts must be pre-registered prior to Quilt Show.

A maximum of three quilts per exhibitor may be entered in the exhibition. Due to space considerations, registration forms will be accepted until 4:00 pm, Monday, April 12, 2010, or until our limit is reached. All quilts must be pre-registered for the Quilt Show (You can also complete and submit your registration form online) and adhere to the following exhibit guidelines:

All entries must...

  • Consist of three layers; two layers of cloth filled with “batting” material and held together by a stitched design, with stitching being distributed throughout the work.

  • Never have been shown in previous Quilt Shows at Sauder Village.

  • Include significant piecing and/or appliqué which affects the overall design if preprinted panels are included in the quilt top.

  • Be quilted, not tied, and no comforter loft batting or big stitch quilts.

  • Be quilted, either by hand or machine or both, in a process separate from the construction process.*

  • May be embellished with material other than cloth.

  • Remain in the exhibit for the entire show until pickup of quilts on Sunday, May 2 at 4:30 pm.

  • Rag quilts are not eligible for entry into this show.

  • The completed Quilt Exhibit Tag form must be pinned (use straight pins) to the front left edge, halfway up the quilt. For wall quilts, pin the form at the bottom left of the quilt. Please fold your quilt so that the form can be easily viewed for check-in.

  • In order to qualify for the judging competition, the quilt exhibitor must have had some part in the making of the quilt (either constructing the quilt top, quilting or both). Purchased quilts, inherited quilts and gift quilts may be entered for exhibit only but will not be judged. Also, any quilt maker who, for any reason, would prefer to enter his/her quilt "for exhibit only" is welcome to do so. "For exhibit only" and judged quilts will be hung together by category and the same entry guidelines will apply equally to both. On your registration form and exhibit tags, please be sure to indicate whether each quilt is to be entered into the judging competition or as "for exhibit only".

  • Quilt artists who have traveled nationally to teach and have published books or patterns must register in the new “Masters” category.  The exhibit director will personally contact all Masters artists to discuss arrangements for this special display.

  • The Masters and Youth categories are for exhibit only and will not be judged.

*The starred items do not apply to the Art / Innovative Quilts category.

Due to the way the quilts are hung, it is not necessary to sew a sleeve onto your quilt.

Incomplete, torn, soiled, framed or mounted quilts will not qualify or be accepted for the exhibit.
