Village Quilt Challenge 2011
Theme: "Flight of Imagination"...
Each entrant will create a quilt design that includes both
Flying Geese (Block A) and Bird in Air (Block B) blocks. You
must use both blocks, but how you put them together is up to
you. Maybe you’ll combine them to create a larger block, or use
them in the border, or integrate them with appliqué, other
blocks or parts of blocks. Put your imagination to work! Check
the chart below for the sizes to cut each of the pieces in the
blocks for a finished 3” block. Of course, you can make your
blocks any size you want, but this will get you started. We know
there are many methods for creating the flying geese units used
in Block A. Any method will work as long as it gives you the
result you’re after. Each entry must be quilted either by hand
and/or machine. In this Challenge we are looking for original,
small-scale quilts with a balance of scale and proportion, fine
workmanship, and pleasing use of fabric and color that creates
pattern, texture, depth and movement as the eye moves across the
quilt. Judging will be based on the criteria above and all
judges decisions are final. All 2011
Challenge quilts are subject to the same entry guidelines as all
other categories in the quilt show.
Fabrics...
For the 2011 challenge we have selected “Gerta” fabrics by local
fabric designer Marcia Derse. The entire line consists of
twenty-four fabric prints plus a printed panel. Each challenge
packet will contain 12 fat quarters of assorted prints, with two
different packets available. Each entrant may choose to work
with one or more fabric packets or mix and match any Gerta
fabrics to create your own color combination. To qualify for the
Challenge, each entry must include an easily recognizable piece
of at least five different Gerta fabrics. One or two other
fabrics of the quilt artist’s choice may be added to this
Challenge entry. The panel fabric from the Gerta collection may
be used on the back of the quilt, if desired, but not on the
front of the Challenge quilt.
We’d love
to have you visit us to personally pickup your fabric
packet, but if that is not possible, we’ll send your challenge
fabrics to you for $36.98 including tax, shipping and handling.
If additional yardages are needed, all challenge fabrics may be
viewed online and ordered by calling Threads of Tradition at
419-445-9610 or 800-590-9755.
