Quilt Challenge 2015
Theme: "Winds of Change"...
In the tradition of the Barn Quilt Movement, we have designed a quilt block for Threads ofTradition. Hanging just outside the quilt shop door, the Triple Windmill block represents the windmill logo of Sauder Village with an original quilt block design. Each entrant in the Winds of Change challenge will create a quilt design that includes at least one Triple Windmill block. These blocks can be any size and may vary in size within the same quilt. Foundation patterns and also paper templates for a 6” Triple Windmill block are included with the challenge guidelines. Make as many copies as you need and enlarge or reduce the size of the foundations or templates to create your desired size block(s).
Fabrics: For the 2015 challenge we have selected the Peppered Cottons designed by Pepper Cory for Studio E fabrics. Peppered Cottons are 100% shot cotton fabrics that almost fall into the solid color category. The term ‘shot’ means that the weft is “shot through” the warp, but uses a discernibly different color of thread. Because the warp (lengthwise threads) and the weft (side to side threads) are different colors, the resulting shades are muted and variable combinations of the original colors, changing slightly depending how light strikes the fabric. Above all, shot
cottons have a tactile hand-woven quality and display deep colors well since all threads are dyed prior to weaving. There is no wrong or right side to shot cottons—a plus for quilt-makers. To qualify for the Challenge, all fabrics used on the front of the quilt and in the binding must be Peppered Cottons. No other fabrics may be included in the quilt design. Challenge fabric bundles are available for purchase. Each bundle includes fat eighths of 25 colors of Peppered Cottons. Additional yardage of the Peppered Cottons is also available.
Construction techniques may include piecing and/or appliqué. Entries may be embellished at the quilt artist’s discretion. Each entry must also comply with all entry requirements and guidelines of the Sauder Village Quilt Show. Since this is a design challenge, each entry must be designed, pieced and/or appliquéd by a single quilt artist; entries that have been designed and the top constructed by more than one person will not qualify for judging. If the quilting is done by someone other than the quilt artist, the quilter must be given credit on the “Quilted by” line on the entry form.
We’d love to have you visit us to personally pick up your fabric packets, but if that is not possible, challenge fabrics may be viewed online and ordered by calling Threads of Tradition Quilt Shop at 419-445-9610 or 800-590-9755 ext 3011. One fabric packet of 25 fat eighths can be shipped to you for $46.50 including tax, shipping and handling. Orders for more than one fabric packet and/or additional yardage of any selected fabrics will be priced according to current retail prices.
Maximum 36” x 36”/ Minimum 24” x 24”. Your quilt can be any shape as long as the outside dimensions fall within these guidelines.
