Dear Quilting Friends,
By
the time you receive this newsletter, the Sauder Village
Quilt Show will be only two weeks away! Right now everything
at the shop seems to center around getting ready for that
fun-filled, weeklong event because we want all of you to have an
exciting and memorable time while you are here. Glora Belle is
busy
creating new displays and rearranging the existing quilts in the
shop to catch your eye and imagination. Dozens of volunteers
have agreed to help with the event and will be doing everything
from hanging the quilts in the show, to waiting on guests in the
shop, staffing the information table at the show, playing piano
and demonstrating quilting techniques.
I
certainly hope that you will be able to attend at least one day
of the show. Even better, sign
up
for some of Nancy Odom’s classes on Wednesday-Saturday, book a
room at the Heritage Inn and reserve some time for a quilting
retreat for yourself and some friends! There are still a few
available spots in each of Nancy’s classes, so the opportunity
to learn from these special workshops is yours for the taking.
If a hands-on workshop is not your idea of fun, maybe you’d
rather attend the Friday evening dinner lecture and awards
banquet where Nancy will be showing many of her quilts and
entertaining
us with her great sense of humor. Even the ingenious title of
her lecture, “Passion, Insanity and Pieced Inspiration” sounds
like a hoot to me! A new event this year is the Gallery Walk
with the show judges. Held Tuesday morning just prior to the
show opening, Gallery Walk participants will be the first to see
the prize-winning quilts and the entire show. Walk the show with
one of the judges and hear first hand what a judge looks for in
a prize-winning quilt and why they chose the quilts that won.

Demonstrations
in Founder’s Hall focus on teaching new or foundational
techniques to enhance your quilt making skills. This year Sharon
Moore will show you how to make Cathedral Window quilts using
both square and rectangular blocks, and Gwen Kruse will be
piecing McKenna Ryan’s absolutely gorgeous Willow fabrics into
the Crystal Ball pattern. Velma Kamp will be creating a floral
design with English Paper Piecing techniques and Marilouise
Waidelich and Freida Sauder will show a simple way to hand
appliqué perfect circles. Each day someone will also demonstrate
the Fun and Done quick and easy method of piecing and finishing
quilts and our hand quilters will be stitching on the Diamond
Dazzler queen sized quilt. If something in that list piques your
curiosity, be sure to stop by the demonstration tables and chat
with the ladies. They love to talk with you!
If you were planning to enter a quilt in the show, I certainly
hope you registered early this year! Response was so great that
on March 31 we had to close registrations in all categories
except the Simply Chic Challenge and Youth quilts. If you still
have a quilt to enter in one of those two categories, please
send in your registration as soon as possible, but all other
categories are full. I believe the fantastic response indicates
that quilters are still busy enjoying quilt making and we will
have an extraordinary display at this year’s show!
Sauder Village
Quilt Retreat
Since
I wrote to you last month, we hosted our spring quilting retreat
at the Heritage Inn. Thirty-eight fun-loving quilters joined us
for 3 days of stitching, chatting, devouring delicious food,
learning from each other, and refreshing relaxation. What a
great way to finish up numerous projects, make new friends, and
take a much needed break from your daily responsibilities. Our
next retreat is scheduled for September 18-20, so mark your
calendar now and plan to join in the fun!
This past weekend (April 3-5) The Quilt Patch
held their retreat at the Heritage Inn. We had a great time
meeting these fellow quilters at Threads of Tradition and
hearing about all the fun projects they were working on during
the retreat. We’re delighted that they chose to come to Sauder
Village! The Heritage Inn is a great environment for a quilting
retreat, so if your guild or group is looking for a meeting
spot, call us to check out the facilities and amenities—we aim
to go above and beyond your expectations!
Nifty
Notions
Creative Grids rulers have issued a
handy new size of ruler for cutting smaller sizes. At 2 ½” x 6
½” this ruler fits easily in your hand and is great for
sub-cutting pieces from fabric strips. As an added bonus, it has
our Threads of Tradition logo and contact information printed on
the ruler!
Machingers
are gloves designed especially for machine quilters. Soft,
flexible fingertip grip gives full control with less resistance
and drag on fabric. The form-fitting, seamless design allows you
to keep your gloves on to clip and change threads, adjust
fabrics, and add or remove pins. These gloves come in either
small/medium or medium/large sizes and the breathable fabric
helps retains skin’s natural moisture. Recommended by quilters
at our retreat, they are excellent for machine piecing and
quilting.
We
are testing two new battings to see if we want to stock them at
Threads of Tradition. The quilt in the frame at the Quilt Show
will use Hobbs Tuscany Polyester batting. This is Hobb’s
premium polyester batting and we want to see if it will prove to
be superior to the batting we have carried in the past. We just
need to put it to the needling test to be sure! In their Tuscany
line, Hobbs also offers wool and silk batts that we can special
order in the size you desire.
The
Baskets and Blooms wall quilt that we are currently hand
quilting in the shop features the new Dream Orient
batting from Quilter’s Dream. Combining bamboo, silk, Tencel and
cotton, should result in a low loft, very drape able warm quilt.
The quilters have determined that it does not needle easily,
making it more appealing for machine quilting. I could see this
batting working very well for tablecloths, clothing items and
anything where you want a low loft, yet very flexible result.
We’ll know for sure when we take Baskets and Blooms out of the
quilting frame.
Ah...
Fabric, Wonderful Fabric!
With the Quilt Show about to begin, we’ve scheduled lots of new
fabric to arrive in March and April. Our largest new collection
is Moda’s Aviary by 3 Sisters. This soft pastel fabric
line is simply delectable in the appliqué quilt designed by Moda
for these fabrics.

Also from Moda, Northern Solitude is a beautiful blend of
burgundy, mauve, green and brown floral and textural prints. We
hope to have a sample quilt sewn from this fabric and Debbie
Caffrey’s Surrounded by Monkeys pattern before the quilt show
begins so look for it next time you stop in the shop.
Other fabrics worthy of consideration include Stone Cottage
by Renee Nannemen and Andover fabrics, An Apple A Day
crazy quilt print and coordinate by Benartex, and the Autumn
Bounty panel and coordinates by Andover.

panel and coordinates in both pink and blue by South Seas.
Debbie Mumm designed Roundup for the young or young at
heart who dream of horses and the cowboy/cowgirl life. In
addition to yardage on the bolt, we have kits available of this
fabric to make the pictured quilt.
