Dear Quilting Friends,

We’ve just returned from the Kaleidoscope Quilt Show, unpacked all the boxes and returned the shop to “normal”.  It was great to see many of you there and also to get acquainted with new quilters.  We hope all of you, both old friends and new, will visit us soon at Threads of Tradition to see all we have to offer.  We spend a lot of time trying to keep up with the new trends and techniques so we can share it all with you!

August Events at Sauder Village
Hopefully the current heat wave releases its grip on us, because we have lots of exciting events planned and we don’t want anyone to miss out on the fun because of the weather.  Many quilters also love doll collecting and rug hooking so be sure to check out the details of our two upcoming events.

Back to School!
Before we know where summer went, the children will be headed back to school.  That’s a great time for adults to also sign up for classes to learn a new skill or technique. Our fall line up of classes begins with the Transitions class at the end of August. We also  have quite a number of classes coming in September, so check the website at:  http://www.saudervillage.org/Creativity/ClassSchedule.asp to see what most interests you!

Fabulous Fabric
Fabric continues to arrive weekly, and we keep busy sewing new samples to give you ideas.  Many of the new fabrics feature autumn, Halloween or Christmas holiday themes.  From outdoor autumn themes to elegant holiday there is something new for every taste.

Plethora of Patterns
Criss Cross QuiltA guy in your life is sure to love one of these masculine Criss Cross quilts, and you’ll love how easy they are to piece. The pattern includes time-saving techniques for cutting and piecing the simple 9” blocks and instructions for assembling either a twin or queen quilt.

Victory BagVictory Bags are a pair of stylish shoulder bags with a 1040’s wartime influence. They are especially wonderful stitched up in felted wool. For your convenience, we have washed and felted a variety of colors of 100% wool fabric so that you won’t have to worry about shrinkage—just take the wool home and you’re ready to stitch up your Victory Bag!

Professional ToteThe Professional Tote has all the pockets and compartments needed for today’s “professional” women. Whether you work in an office or not, this tote has it all, there is even plenty of room inside for a laptop! To finish it off, there is a zipper that closes tight to keep the contents secure. This bag would also work great as a sewing tote with a place for patterns or books, fabrics and notions. And let’s not forget about the “professional” diaper bag with pockets for all the baby’s needs!

Quilting BookazineWhat in the World is a Bookazine?
Looks like a magazine on the outside, but once you open it up, the inside is so packed with patterns and instructions that there is no room for advertising and you’ll realize that the bookazine has as much to offer as a quilting book—you just don’t have to pay for the expensive cover.   The pattern for our Boxed In class is included in the Sew Scrappy—Quilts for Fabric Lovers issue.

Best Quilts for Kids includes 30 easy, attractive and eye-catching projects for babies through teens with complete patterns and directions as well as an article on how to “kid-proof” your quilts.

Spellbinding Books

Fast & Furious Holiday Quilting All the holiday fabric arriving in the shop reminds me that we need new holiday pattern ideas as well.  To quickly create holiday projects, look for ideas in Fast and Furious Holiday. Create beginner friendly bags, tree skirts, stockings, placemats, wall quilts, ornaments, and table runners for any holiday.  All projects are constructed with a quilt as you go technique which means you’ll have plenty of time to make even more of these fun holiday items for Christmas, Easter, Valentines Day, Halloween or 4th of July.

Just around the Corner bookCan mitered corners be easy?  Yes!  Create a frame using folded fabric strips, any 90 degree ruler, a marking pen and a sewing machine.  Then fold back the straight portion of the mitered frame to give it a charming scalloped effect.  Learn this technique and much more in Just Around the Corner Quilts with Easy Mitered Borders.

Out of the BoxLift the lid on creativity with Out of the Box with Easy Blocks, fun with free-form piecing.Enjoy confidence building projects that anyone can make while you create pictorial blocks, as well as wonkey traditional blocks.  Let Mary Lou Weidman and Melanie Bautista McFarland be your guides on this creative journey!

Gadgets Galore
Handi ToolMy gadget of the month is a crossover from my knitting friends. The Handi Tool from Susan Bates is about 4" long with a small crochet hook on one end and a knitting needle on the other.  In the sewing room, the knitting needle end works great as a stiletto or for turning corners out without poking through fabric. The other end of the tool can be used to grab your bobbin thread from under the presser foot of your machine. At $1.60 each you can afford to have one of these with each of your knitting projects and  keep an extra by the sewing machine.

Donna Sharp PursesIt’s time to wrap up this issue of Current Threads, but not before I mention that some bags from Donna Sharp in the new colors for fall have arrived in the shop and more will be on their way very soon.  New styles, new colors equal a stylish new look!

Threads of Tradition LogoKeep cool, stay indoors and sew, or visit us at Threads of Tradition in our air-conditioned comfort!  Looking forward to seeing you soon.
