Dear Quilting Friends,
During these long, hot summer days, I’m sure many of you are
busy in your vegetable and flower gardens. Digging in the dirt
and producing a crop is rewarding, but also a very hot and
tiring job, so when you need a break or inspiration for some
other creative outlets, stop in and visit us at Threads of
Tradition - it’s cool inside!
Events in the
Works
Sauder
Village has lots of events planned for August, and many of them
are of special interest to anyone who loves fabric and fiber,
needle and thread. We are beginning this special month with our
annual Member’s Night on Tuesday, August 3 from 5:30 –
8:30 pm. All members of Sauder Village are invited to attend and
get a behind the scenes glimpse of new areas and development at
the Village. A picnic meal will be served in Founders Hall for a
free will donation from 5:30 – 7:00 pm, and popcorn, as well as
buggy and train rides are all free for members on this special
evening. Also, that night only, your regular 10% membership
discount will be raised to a 25% discount in all the retail
shops in the village, including Threads of Tradition quilt shop.
If you are already a member, you’re invited! If you are not
currently a member, it’s not too late to join. For information
on becoming a member, visit our website at
http://www.saudervillage.org/development/default.asp.

The annual Doll & Teddy Bear Show & Sale is scheduled for
August 7-8 and Founders Hall will be filled with vendor’s
displays of dolls, bears, doll clothing, furniture and
accessories. I know from past years that many quilters are also
doll collectors; so if that includes you, don’t miss this event!
Another exciting event is the Rug Hooking Show and
classes on August 18 – 21. Of special interest is the featured
exhibit - Celebrations and the amazing “Noah’s Ark” by
Mary
Sheppard Burton and artist Leonard Feenan. This three
dimensional Ark stands 5’ 7” and weighs more than 300 pounds. On
the deck of the Ark, you will see more than 100 individual
hooked animals and people...it’s simply an inspiration. So come
and see how talented rug hookers use their specialized
techniques to turn fiber and fabric into works of art. You might
be tempted to add hooking to your repertoire of skills!
August 12-14 Threads of Tradition will be represented at the
Appleseed Quilt Show in the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne,
Indiana. Stop in and say hello to Glora Belle and her helpers in
our vendor’s booth at that show. She’ll be happy to show you
what’s new in the shop and to help you choose your next project!
The booth will be stocked with kits for our newest quilts, lots
of precuts and fabric bundles as well as books, patterns and
notions. We hope to see you there!
Although
it seems like a long way off, our October 1-3 Fall Quilting
Retreat is filling fast. We currently have over 66
registrants and have room for up to 75 quilters. At the rate
we’re going, I think the retreat will be full before I write the
September Current Threads, so this may be your last reminder to
register before the opportunity is lost! For more information,
or to register check out our website at:

Handy Precuts
To
the best of my knowledge, Moda is the originator of the precut
fabric pack craze. Now nearly every fabric company has their own
version of the jelly roll (2 ˝” strips) although they all need
to come up with their own name since the jelly roll name belongs
to Moda. In addition to purchasing some of the 2 ˝” strip rolls
from various companies, we also cut some of our own, choosing
coordinating fabrics from our inventory. Recently we selected
and cut two new “jelly rolls” from our batiks and also
purchased Timeless Treasures packs of sherbet colored
batiks that would make a delicious baby quilt.
Charm
squares (precut 5” squares) are also popular with quilters.
Recently we received stacks of five new Moda charms. The newest
Moda charms are Spirit, Fandango, Summers Eve, Origins, and Luna
Notte. We are also cutting our own charm packs in both Asian
fabrics and a red/white/tan and blue combination. Both of our
charm packs are designed to work with a particular pattern, but
you can, of course, use them for any quilt of your choice.
Recently
Moda has introduced a new size of precut called Candy Bars.
Cut at 2 ˝” x 5” they are sized to work with charm squares or
jelly rolls. Packaged to look like a giant chocolate candy bar,
each box includes forty 2 ˝” x 5” pieces from each of four new
fabric collections, for a total of 160 different fabric
swatches! They have also included a project sheet to get you
sewing quickly. We have two different collections in stock, one
with lighter colored fabrics (milk chocolate) and one with
darker prints (dark chocolate).
Fabulous Fabric Finds

Of course fabric does still come on bolts and we have lots of
new tempting selections for you. Benartex’s black and white
Word Play fabrics include a panel and also coordinates where
the design is created by words and lines of text—a great
crossover to a scrapbooking look!

Was it back in the 1970’s that the Brady Bunch was a
hit TV show? Well, Michael Miller Fabrics remembers them and has
created a fabric line which includes a fabric design for each
family member--Alice, Peter, Greg, Jan, Cindy and Bobby.
Other new fabric groups such as Spa by Windham and
Jane by Blank are great focal fabric groups that would make
a great start for a special quilt.

Other new fabrics include a variety of border prints for sewing
up table runners. Pictured are the new Celebrate! border
and the Rooster border, but we also have a classic
music print that would make great table runners, a couple of
snowmen borders as well as pretty florals and geometric designs.

Taking
off in an entirely new direction are the printed knit fabrics
we purchased to make clothing items. The first shipment of four
bolts has arrived, but more coordinating knits should be coming
in soon. I can see these prints mixed and matched in darling
little shirts, skirts, leggings and bolero vests for the
modern, fashion conscious little girls and their mothers.
Gifts and
Notions
A great selection of batik scarves from Island
Batiks are back in stock. If you missed these scarves in the
spring, now is the time to snap one up. At only $12.98 each,
these gorgeous scarves are a real deal on a hot fashion
accessory!

Jim
Shore figurines continue to be very popular, and he just
keeps on designing new and more interesting pieces. One charming
recent arrival is a small box with an antique sewing machine on
top. When you open the lid, a spool and scissors dangle from the
inside…too cute! The other new figurine is named “Totem
Americana” and features a pumpkin, a Pilgrim, an Indian, and
a turkey stacked in totem pole style.
Quilt
Happy notepad and sticky note organizers are available
again. These are great for keeping beside your favorite reading
chair and marking all the quilts and articles you want to find
again with ease, or tracking your progress in the pattern
currently under construction. With multiple colors of sticky notes, you
can color code to keep yourself easily organized!
One
notion that should be in every quilter’s tool box is the new
Heat Press Batting Together tape. Designed for joining
pieces of batting together to create a larger batt, this new
fusible cloth tape will allow you to use up your leftover
batting pieces without having to stitch them together. Each
package contains 10 yards of 1 ˝” wide fusible cloth tape. To
use, just lay your batting edges together and with your iron
press the tape over the edges in an up and down motion.
Instructions are included for the appropriate iron temperature
settings for different batting fibers.
Broaden Your
Horizons with Books
Indygo
Junction has published two new unique purse patterns that are
sure to catch your eye. Victory Bags are a pair of
stylish shoulder bags with a 1940’s wartime influence. These
bags are
constructed
with a set-in gusset base, are a sensible size for everyday use
and feature attractive details like pleat detailing and center
flaps with decorative buttons. Streetcar Bags are
inspired by the styles of the early 1950’s. These roomy shoulder
bags combine a practical size and shape with unique detailing.
One version has a pretty pleated bow-shaped overlay at the front
to give added texture and fastens with a long, pointed
tab/magnetic snap. Suggested fabrics for all four styles include
wool or decorator weight fabric.
Spice
up your life with the thirteen scrumptious quilts in Miss
Rosie’s Spice of Life Quilts. Author Carrie Nelson’s designs
are always a feast for the eyes - yet they are simple to make.
That’s because her recipe for success relies on basic piecing,
allowing the dozens of print fabrics to work beautifully
together. Have fun using Carrie’s clear instructions to cook up
your own sweet creations!
In
the effort to preserve our ties to the past, Jo Morton’s new
book Coming Home includes twelve new projects and two
projects that are “worth repeating”! Jo’s style is well known to
quilt lovers because using an antique quilt’s color and/or
design as a source of inspiration, she creates an interpretation
of a quilt that might have existed in the 19th century. She also
designs fabric lines to go with the period of her quilt designs.
Be sure to look for her fabrics in our reproduction section or
ask a staff person for assistance.
Earlier
I mentioned that we have lots of charm squares in stock. The new
book Nickel Quilts and Borders which includes seven new
quilts and 260 borders, all based on 5 inch squares will provide
plenty of ideas for using those charms to jazz up traditional
quilts with easy-to-make pieced borders. Every quilt pattern
includes directions for three different sizes, all made with 5
inch squares. It also includes a handy worksheet for calculating
the inner border width, which will allow you to fit any pieced
border to your quilt.
The
intricate feathered star block has been considered a benchmark
of achievement for quilt makers since the 1800’s. In Marsha
McCloskey’s book Feathered Star Quilt Blocks II, you’ll
find patterns for 15 new and traditional grid-based feathered
star blocks. The smallest finishes at 10 ˝”, the largest at 26
7/8”. Design and shading variations are given throughout. Some
star blocks in this book are really hard and take a long time to
make, others are fairly simple. All require careful cutting and
accurate piecing, but are worth the effort!
C&T
Publishing’s Design Collective is a series of craft sewing books
that showcases select groups of fresh, contemporary designers.
Little Birds, the first book in the series, features
unique projects crafted by fabric artists with a presence on
popular websites such as Etsy.com. With the designs in Little
Birds, you can create your very own handmade menagerie with 26
one-of-a-kind projects, from artistic to folksy to whimsical.
The variety of materials and embellishments is sure to inspire
you to make every bird in the book. These little sweeties make
delightful gifts…and the perfect pets!
So
I hope you survive the “dog days” of summer and keep your sunny,
cheerful outlook on life by spending some time creating your own
versions of these new projects using whichever wonderful fabrics
call your name and speak to your soul.
Keep on quilting,
Linda
