Dear Quilting Friends,
The holiday season has arrived and I wish all of you a wonderful
Thanksgiving with family and friends. Life doesn’t get much
better than feasting and celebrating with those you love! And of
course, as soon as Thanksgiving is over, the Advent season and
Christmas preparations are on the forefront of everyone’s mind.
In the midst of all the hustle and bustle, remember to carve out
some time for yourself to do the things you love, like stitching
gifts that bring joy and delight to each recipient. Of course,
their delight brings much joy to us, the givers, as well.
The
hustle and bustle of the season also extends into our quilt
shop. We love helping quilters with ideas for gift giving and
choosing the perfect fabrics for each special project. It’s not
too late to sew for Christmas... I still have several projects
left on my to-do list. Snap Happy purses and border
print tablerunners seem to be topping the list of quick and
easy gift ideas this Christmas season, so if you aren’t familiar
with either of those, stop in and we’ll be glad to get you
started.
Spring
Quilting Retreat - Almost Completely Booked!
Although
it is still 3 months away, we already have 36 eager quilters
registered for our spring quilting retreat to be held at the
Heritage Inn on March 5-7, 2010. Since our retreat space
will be upstairs in the Homestead Room this year, we have
reconfigured the floor plan to allow more people to attend, but
45 is the maximum we can fit in and still give each person their
own 6 foot table and room to move around freely. So... if you
are planning to attend but have not yet registered, I recommend
that you go online today at
http://www.saudervillage.org/Hospitality/Quilt_Retreat_Reg.asp
to print the registration form, fill it out and either fax it to
419-445-5251 or mail it to the address on the form. Those last
few spaces are going to fill quickly and we don’t want you to be
left out!
Civil War
Tribute Block of the Month
A
while back we sent out a news flash offering you the opportunity
to participate in a special Civil War Block of the Month,
commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Fifteen of
you quickly responded and committed to making this wonderful
historical quilt. Based on that response, I ordered enough
fabric to make up to 25 kits, so if you would still like to join
this enterprising group, let us know as soon as possible. The
first kits will be ready January 10th, either for shipping or
picking up at Threads of Tradition, but you must pre-register to
guarantee the availability of a packet. Once you are in the
program, on the 10th of each month a kit with fabric, pattern,
historical information and stories will be reserved for you. If
you love history and reproduction quilts, this is the block of
the month for you! For more information, give us a call or stop
in the shop.
Hold the Bus for the
OH-MI Shop Hop!
Save
the dates of February 25-27, 2010 to attend a Garden
Tea Party hosted by nine quilt shops in southern Michigan
and northwest Ohio. The first 400 quilters to purchase a $5.00
passport will receive an etched glass souvenir mug along with a
passport to fun and savings! Each shop will offer a free gift, a
large selection of fabric on sale at 20% off, fantastic door
prizes, tea party snacks, and one page of the pattern for the
2010 progressive quilt. The center design of the progressive
quilt will be consistent, but each shop will design a unique
border to complement the interior of the quilt, so you will have
nine different options for creating the quilt of your choice.
Your hostesses for this event will be: Corner Quilts, Quilt
Foundry, Sonflower Quilts and Threads of Tradition in Ohio and
Sew What, Pieceful Traditions, Material Girls, Quilt Patch and
Viking Sewing Center in Michigan.
New
this year - Threads of Tradition and Corner Quilts will
be co-sponsoring a bus trip for the OH-MI Shop Hop. The
bus will leave the Sauder Village parking lot at 7:15 am on
Friday, February 26, visit the other seven shops and return
around 7:30 pm. In order to make the most of your day on the
bus, you will be responsible to get your passport stamped at
Corner Quilts and Threads of Tradition on either Thursday or
Saturday during the shop hop. The $55.00 cost of the bus trip
includes your passport, transportation, your choice of a Jr.
Chef Salad or chicken salad croissant sack lunch prepared by the
Barn Restaurant, a late afternoon snack, fun and games on the
bus, and the camaraderie of many quilting friends. Stop in or
call us at 419-445-9610 to reserve your seat on the bus and you
will be free to enjoy yourself and let the worries of driving,
directions and the weather up to someone else!
Members Family & Friends Sale
Just
a reminder for all of you who are members of Sauder Village -
the annual member’s sale is scheduled for December 11-12. On
those two days, you will receive a 25% discount on all your
purchases with presentation of your current membership card.
(Normal exclusions apply) You will also be able to extend that
privilege to your family and friends by giving them coupons to
use in our retail shops. If you are a member, we’ll be looking
for you on those days; if you aren’t a member yet, there is
still time to become one before the special sale. Memberships
can be purchased in the Welcome Center at Sauder Village or
contact Sharon Fellers at ext. 3032.
Got a Notion?
We purchased a new display rack for rotary cutting supplies and
consequently rearranged the entire notions section. Isn’t it
funny how every time we rearrange an area (either in the shop or
at home) it seems to look so much better and have a lot
more
space than before? Since we “discovered” all that extra space,
we’ve added a few new notions that we are excited to tell you
about. We now stock Sharon Schamber’s appliqué stabilizer
that she sells on her website as well as her Quilt Halo and
Bobbin Washers. Since she will be teaching workshops at the
2010 Quilt Show, we wanted to have her special products on hand
for you to try.
 Other
new products include the cutest little jars full of color
coordinated Buttons Galore for embellishing or as
functional buttons. A whole jar of these beauties costs just
$5.49. And speaking of embellishing, we now carry the full line
of DMC embroidery floss solid colors and Variations along
with Presencia floss that we have sold for quite some time.
Fabulous
Fabric
As always, new fabric is arriving almost daily. New flavors of
Bali Pops (packages of 2 ½” strips of Hoffman batiks)
include Berry Bliss, Green Tea, Spumoni, Kiwiberry, Cotton
Candy, Cappuccino and Mulberry. Bali Pop Frenzy, the
fourth pattern book using the new Bali Pops is a great
inspiration for quilt ideas using these luscious strips.
Other new selections include fabric for nearly every taste. From
Paris in Springtime florals to Midnight Cowboy
silhouettes, Timeless Treasures Kiwi and Black, Moda's
Old Primrose Inn, Joanna’s Collection from Elm Creek
Quilts to Close to My Heart batiks by Edyta Sitar the
options are almost limitless. These snapshots can pique your
curiosity, but you’ll just have to stop in, stroke the fabric
and unroll a yard or two to get the big picture!

Books
Both Sharyn Craig and Jane Townswick, recent guest artists and
instructors at our annual quilt show, have published brand new
books. Sharyn loves to take a traditional block and see how many
totally different quilts she can make using it. At the same
time, her analytical mind is always trying to find easier and
more efficient methods for piecing traditional blocks. It’s the
combination of her creative variations and her organized sewing
systems that she brings to this new Half Log Cabin book.
In
her new book, Artful Appliqué II, Jane Townswick presents
a fresh collection of stunning designs! Learn from a renowned
expert and achieve the gorgeous results you want. If you studied
with Jane when she was in Archbold, you’ll surely want to add
these 12 new floral designs and her scraplique technique to the
other wonderful techniques you learned in her workshops.

Mary Lou Weidman wants to help you get Out of the Box and
unleash your creativity through quilts. In her new book, you’ll
discover a treasure trove of ideas, exercises, tips and
techniques for unlocking your creativity. You’ll also learn the
importance of mood, composition, and drama in story quilts.
Every quilter has a story to tell, so let this book help you
start making quilts that tell your own colorful stories—and live
happily ever after!
Stash
Magic includes 13 quilts that make the most of your fabric
collection. With guidance from Jaynette Huff, quilters of all
levels can now take ordinary scrap quilts to a new level of
design. Jaynette uses a variety of techniques including paper
foundation piecing, string piecing and appliqué in these 13
projects. Now you can put all those narrow and odd-shaped fabric
bits, strips and strings to use! Ordinary scraps, extraordinary
quilts!
Make your next quilt unforgettable with elegant designs.
Sophisticated Stitches: Designs for Quilting, Appliqué, Sashiko
and Embroidery will show you how to take a simple quilt and
make it spectacular with 66 art deco motifs, flowers and
Japanese crests. Enlarge or reduce the designs to fit any space.

When your fingers get the itch to stitch, we’ll be at the shop
all winter, Monday through Saturday from 10:00 – 5:00 ready and
willing to help in any way we can. Let us be your respite from
the craziness of the holidays as well as your escape from cabin
fever when the snow flies. And mark your calendar now for the
Member’s Sale, OH-MI Shop Hop and Spring Quilting Retreat -
we’ll be looking for you!
Happy Stitching,
Linda
