Dear Quilting Friends,
While the wind is blowing the snow into drifts and temperatures
have dropped well below freezing is the perfect time to snuggle
up under a quilt as you stitch on the binding or to retreat to
your sewing room and warm up with a creative new project.
Quilting is certainly a hobby for all seasons! Of course, we all
eventually catch a bit of cabin fever and miss our quilting
friends, so we are planning some fun quilting adventures for the
winter and spring months.
A Traveling
Tea Party!
The
annual OH-MI Shop Hop will be here before we know it. We
have finished piecing our version of the Progressive Quilt
and the soft bright colors set on a white background really
are a breath of fresh spring air! Soon we will begin tagging all
the bolts of fabric that will be on sale at 20% off for shop
hoppers only, so come in to get a preview of what we will have
to offer.

The tea party theme for the Shop Hop will
provide opportunity for dress-up fun. We’re hoping to find
dressy tea party hats and maybe even a few pairs of white gloves
for our staff. Why not join us in having fun and come in
costume!
Tickets for the Friday bus trip are selling steadily, with
quilters excited about the convenience of this option. For those
on the bus, Lana Johns our bus leader, will take care of getting
your passports stamped, pick up your free gifts to distribute on
the bus, and enter your name for the prize drawings at each
shop, as well as keeping the drive time interesting. Stop in or
call now to join in the fun with other quilters and leave all
your worries behind, at least for one day!
Sauder
Village Quilt Retreat
The
very next weekend after shop hop, on March 5-7, Threads
of Tradition is hosting a quilting retreat at the Heritage Inn.
We thought this retreat was full a month ago, but then, due to
pleading from previous participants, we decided to think outside
the box and came up with a plan that allows us to include up to
70 quilters and still give each person an entire 6 foot table of
her own space. We’re very excited about the growth of this
retreat and as I write this newsletter, we have 66 quilters
registered, leaving only 4 empty tables. But…there are
still 4 openings, and one could be yours if you call
right away!
If you can’t make it in the spring, on March 8th we will open
registrations for our fall retreat, scheduled for October 1-3.
When you call, please ask for Dawn Hauter, our special events
coordinator. You can reach her at 800-590-9755 ext. 3076 or by
email at
dhauter@saudervillage.org.
Quilt Show with
Sharon Schamber
Now
is the time to mark your calendars to attend the Sauder Village
Annual Quilt Show April 27- May 2. Sharon Schamber will be
teaching workshops on Wednesday – Saturday during the show.
Registrations for workshops are easy to compete online at
https://www.saudervillage.org/Online_Registrations/MemberSelection.asp?FRM=4
We had a great response to classes with this popular teacher on
January 13 when registrations opened, but as I write this
newsletter, there are still a few openings in all of the
workshops, so it is not too late to be inspired by one of the
top award-winning quilters of our time.

Sharon
has written two books and will be teaching from both of them at
our show. We are stocking copies of Piec-lique, Curves
the New Way and Piece by Piece Machine Applique at
Threads of Tradition so feel free to come in and get a preview
of Sharon’s techniques or purchase the books prior to class.
I know you have all been busy creating wonderful quilts and we
would love to see them hanging in our show this year.
Registering to enter a quilt into the show can be completed
quickly and easily by clicking on the link and filling in the
form online at:
http://www.saudervillage.org/Creativity/quiltshow_RegTag.asp.
On the registration form you will notice that this year we have
designated sizes for wall quilts and bed quilts as well as
dividing the Pieced Machine Quilted categories into large bed,
small
bed,
large wall quilt, small wall quilt categories due to the large
number of quilts in this category the last few years. Hopefully
these changes will divide the show into categories with more
similar number of entries throughout the show. Please consider
exhibiting your best work to share your accomplishments with
other quilters and inspire all of us to continue developing our
quilt making skills.
Civil War
Tribute Block of the Month Opportunity
Going… going… almost gone!
We
ordered enough fabric for 25 monthly kits of this popular block
of the month andhave the January kits all packaged and ready to
go. Many of you have already received your kits and are working
on piecing those blocks. We have pre-sold all the kits we have
cut, but I have ordered more fabric so that we can continue to
include more participants. We would be delighted to have you
join us on this historical adventure, so if you are interested
please contact us no later than the end of February. By then we
will have all the fabrics available so we can cut as many kits
as you would like and you can easily catch up with the rest of
the group. If you would like to see the quality of the
fabric and samples of the type of blocks used, we have the
blocks for the first three months on display in the classroom at
Threads of Tradition. Come and take a good look!

Fashionable Accessories
Scarves
are everywhere you look in fashion magazines and an integral
part of many outfits today. Ours are rayon batik fabric with a
wonderful light weight hand while still providing a bit of
warmth if you wear them close to the neck. The rayon drapes
gracefully no matter how you choose to wear your scarf. Each of
our 24 scarves are unique in color and pattern, with something
for everyone. Priced at just $12.98 each, the biggest problem is
choosing just one - two ended up going home with me!
Fabric by New
Local Designer
At
the fabric show in Shipshewana, Indiana last fall, the fabric
line that caught our eye was Gerta designed by Marcia Derse
of Sylvania, Ohio. The fact that this fabric was designed by
a local artist made it just that much more appealing. The panel
and twenty-four coordinating fabrics have an artistic,
contemporary flair with limitless color combinations that would
enhance any décor. These fabrics would look great in quilts or
other home decorating items. We like it so much that we’ve
decided to use Marcia’s Gerta fabrics as our selection
for the 2011 quilt show challenge. We will be packaging fat
quarters in two different color ways to be sold at the 2010
quilt show so that the challenge quilts can be displayed at the
2011 show. But don’t worry, we have plenty of fabric ordered so
we will also be putting this line of fabric out to sell in early
February for use in any project of your choice. So… let your
imagination soar!
Kaffe Fassett is a British fabric designer and quilter who has
developed quite a following among quilters worldwide. His quilts
combine many large-scale prints with interesting color
combinations. He has published numerous books that show examples
of his color theory. In our contemporary fabric area, you will
find a collection of fat quarters of Kaffe’s fabrics as
well as a book or two that may challenge you to see color and
print in a whole new way. Come and see if you are inspired to
step out in a new direction.
Perfect
Patterns for Little Ones
A
couple of new patterns just beg to be mentioned, especially for
new
moms and grandmothers. Pea Pod (don’t you just love that
creative name?!) is a pocket style baby sling that features an
expandable pocket for cell phone, mp3 player or pacifier, and a
ring for car keys or baby toy. As a bonus, a doll sling pattern
is included so that older children can carry their baby doll
just like mom carries their new sibling.
For
toddlers and older children, consider the Family Funbook;
a personalized photo album and story book to help little ones
recognize family members. Up to eight family members can be
included, with a poem and appliqué about each family member on
the left page and a photo sleeve to place your very own photo of
each family member on the right page. Eleven appliqués and ten
poems provide opportunity to personalize each book for the
special child in your family.
This Month at Threads
of Tradition
Another annual event at the end of January is the required
inventory of all items for sale in the shop. On January 27-28
the shop will be buzzing with staff and volunteers busy counting
every item we own. I mention this because, while we will be open
for business, those days may not be the best time to have us
help you plan your next project or spend a lot of time helping
you remedy problems with your current project. So, while we
always love it when you stop in to visit, we could give you more
focused time and attention on another day this month. Thanks for
understanding!
I
know some of us are already counting the days until spring, but
even winter has it’s own special beauty and makes us appreciate
the warmth and promise of new life that comes with spring. On
some brisk, sunny winter day, bundle up and take a road trip to
see us or participate in a fun quilting event like shop hop or
retreat. While you’re out, remember to stock up on quilting
supplies to brighten your winter and carry you through the
inevitable cold, gray days until spring.
Especially in winter, I’m grateful for the love of quilting that
provides a never-ending creative outlet and opportunities to
nurture friendships with others who understand and share this
passion.
Keep on quilting,
Linda
