It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Sauder Village Quilt Show! Even though the weather did not cooperate very well that week (or any time since then) thousands of quilt lovers came out to enjoy the show and share their love of quilting and obsession for beautiful fabric! We love being caught up in the whirlwind of energy and enthusiasm as we all learn from each other! If you weren’t able to attend this year’s show, you can see the winning quilts on our website at http://www.saudervillage.org/Creativity/quiltshow_winners.asp
We hope you will save the dates of May 1-6, 2012 and make plans to visit Sauder Village during next year’s quilt show. Karen Kay Buckley will be our guest artist and instructor, teaching appliqué workshops. To get a head start on learning her techniques, her books and a DVD that covers all of Karen’s tips and tricks for both hand and machine appliqué are available now at Threads of Tradition.
The Twister demonstration table was a very popular spot during the 2011 show; so much so that we couldn’t keep the two sizes of the ruler in stock. If you were hoping to purchase a Twister (using 10” squares) or Lil Twister (using 5” squares) and we were sold out, we now have a good supply and will be happy to get one into your hands. For those of you who like to work in a smaller scale, Primitive Gatherings has come out with the Primitive Pinwheels which is the same technique but starts with a 3 ½” square. The Itty Bitty Primitive Pinwheels starts with a 2 ½” square and finishes at just 1 inch!
Since the show, we’ve rearranged the shop again to make room for two new hutches; one is filled with charm packs, layer cakes and rolls of 2 ½” strips, and the other is brimming with printed fabric panels of children’s cloth books, crib quilts, pillow panels and wall quilts. Stop in and see these new lighted displays that make it so much easier to find the perfect panel or precut fabric for your next project.
Special Events at Sauder Village
Now that the Historic Village is open for the season, many special events are planned with something happening almost every weekend. Also, for all residents of Defiance County—your admission on Saturday, June 11th is free, including admission to the Gospel Music concert! Be sure to stop in the quilt shop and say hello sometime during that special day. For a full schedule of special events visit our website at http://www.saudervillage.org/Creativity/events.asp.
Fabulous Fabric
New fabrics include Moda’s new autumn group Grand Finale, which is coordinated around an attractive pumpkin panel; charm squares are also available. Ready or not, Christmas fabric is beginning to arrive in the shop. The newest Christmas line is Jovial, designed by Basic Grey for Moda. Robyn Pandolph’s Bowood House line is in classic red and green, and border prints featuring sleeping cats and Halloween jack-o-lanterns in simple-to-stitch tablerunners are also recent arrivals. The youngest generation will love the new VIP Exclusive Dinosaur Train fabric line as well as the cute adult and baby animals in Baby & Me by Henry Glass. New children’s soft and cuddly flannel prints by Riley Blake are perfect for receiving blankets or burp rags.

Nifty Notions
As quilters we use our fabric scissors all the time and we know the value of a good sharp pair. We’ve been looking for a method to keep our shop scissors sharp and have found a simple, inexpensive tool by Fiskars that bring scissors back to their original edge. Small enough to fit inside your pocket, it works on both right and left-handed scissors. Simply insert scissors into the sharpener, with the ceramic rod in between the blades. Draw the scissors toward yourself in a cutting action, applying gentle pressure. Repeat several times as needed to restore the cutting edge.
Turn ordinary quilts into extraordinary with a simple ruler that works wonders! Cut the corners to create truly dynamic quilts. The Cutting Corners Ruler designed by Sharyn Craig gives you the simple and accurate measurements to eliminate a corner from a block, a square, rectangle or triangle, while leaving the seam allowance on the remaining piece. Just add another fabric (pieced or not) and turn plain blocks into complex beauties! Use it in blocks, sashings or to create amazing setting triangles. The clear step-by-step instructions included in a 16 page booklet will show you how!
Plethora of Patterns
Glora Belle and I spent one entire morning sorting through piles of new patterns and have selected our favorites to stock in the shop. One new designer especially caught our eye. Julie Herman’s Jaybird Quilt patterns have a fresh new look, the instructions are printed with full
color pictures and each pattern gives instructions for multiple sizes of quilts from Baby to Queen/King. Dot Party features raw edge appliqué for a simple, yet visually graphic, eye-catching quilt. With the ease of pre-cut 2 ½” strips you can create Hugs & Kisses, a star crossed lovers quilt. The Lazy Angle Ruler makes this quilt simple to cut, but you could also make your own plastic templates instead of using the special ruler.
Three different blocks give the Crooked Mile quilt tons of movement. Quick piecing and no matching make it a joy to stitch. Let your imagination soar because there are loads of layout possibilities. Instructions are included for small lap, large lap and twin sizes, or add borders to make a queen size quilt.
Country Threads is a pattern company known for their variations of traditional designs. Some of their new patterns include Best of All— an intermediate level scrap quilt in which every star block is pieced with different fabrics—a case where more really is better! Gather the Troops is a scrappy wall quilt sewn from twenty 10” pieced basket blocks. The use of a light and also a medium background in each block creates a diagonal line of interest throughout the quilt which makes this pattern quite unique and appealing.

Spellbinding Books

The historic quilting bee gets a modern makeover in an inspiring new book The Modern Quilting Bee Block Party. Quilting mavericks Alissa and Kristen chronicle their year-long “virtual” quilting bee. Twelve chapters, one for each month, showcase the designs of today’s leading modern quilters along with easy-to-follow guidelines, so you can reinvent their work in your own signature style. Best of all, with this book in hand, you’ll have everything you need to start your own online quilting bee and enjoy collaborating with other fabric lovers around the world!
Quilter’s can’t get enough of Kay Mackenzie’s appliqué designs. Inspired by Tradition presents 50 all-new elegant designs with traditional appeal, such as Whig Rose, Pineapple, and Fleur-de-lis. The bonus CD features each block in five sizes, from 6” to 12”. No need to enlarge—just print the size you need. The book shows color photos of each block design stitched in fabric, plus a line drawing for tracing. Also discover Kay’s tips for enjoyable hand and fusible machine appliqué.
On Wednesday, June 1st Glora Belle and I traveled to Shipshiwana Indiana to see all the new fabrics that debuted at Spring Market. We saw hundreds of fabulous new fabrics from all the major, top-quality designers and we chose what we believe are the best of the best for showcasing at Threads of Traditions. And as they arrive in the shop, we’ll keep you posted in future issues of Current Threads.
Keep on feeding your creativity with beautiful fabric and pleasing patterns, and most of all, keep on quilting!
