Dear Quilting Friends,
We’re in that time of
the year in northwest Ohio where winter and spring are battling
for control. We know that spring will win, we just don’t know
when! March is always an unpredictable month, which makes it a
great time to finish winter quilting projects before the outside
work begins. Consider the possibility of working on those
projects at our Spring Quilting Retreat to be held at the Sauder
Heritage Inn March 13-15. We have rearranged our floor plan to
accommodate up to 40 quilters and at the moment I am writing
this, we have 36 registered, so there are just a few spaces
available. You can see all the details about the retreat at:
http://www.saudervillage.org/Hospitality/quiltshop.asp#Classes
Registration forms are available online, but with this short
notice it is better to register by calling Jan Nofziger at
800.590.9755 to claim your spot. Come and join the fun and beat
the winter blues!
Quilt Show -
Coming Soon!
Plans are well under way for another fantastic Quilt
Show to be held in Founder’s Hall at Sauder Village Tuesday,
April 28 – Sunday, May 3, 2009. Quilt entries for the show are
ahead of schedule with around 260 entries already registered.
We’d
love to see one of your recent quilts in our show, so
register soon since due to space limitations we must close
registration when we reach 400 entries.
Classes with Nancy Odom
are available Wednesday through Saturday of that week. Link to
our website at:
http://www.saudervillage.org/Creativity/quiltfair_workshops.asp
to see which class or classes interest you the most.
If a hands-on class isn’t what you are looking for, consider
attending the dinner lecture and awards night on Friday evening
where you will have the privilege of meeting Nancy and seeing
many of her quilts as she speaks on Passion, Insanity and Pieced
Inspiration.
Another great option is the new Gallery Walk with
one of the judges prior to the show opening on Tuesday morning.
Walk the show with one of the judges and hear first hand what a
judge looks for in a prize-winning quilt and why they chose the
quilts that won. Registrations for workshops, dinner lecture and
the gallery walk can all be completed online or print a
registration form to mail.
For many years, we have custom designed a dated
quilt fair pin for each quilt show. This year we have decided to
start something slightly different. Instead of a pin, we have
designed a dated charm and also a charm holder pin.
The pin will hold many charms and will serve as a wonderful way
to collect and display all your charms for many years to come.
Both will be available at the hostess table in Founder’s Hall
and in Threads of Tradition Quilt Shop during the show while
supplies last. The charms and holders are
still in production,
but the artist sketch shown here gives you an idea of what they
will look like. We’re excited to see the final product and hope
you will love this new twist on a collectible memento from the
show.
Another new feature of our Quilt Show this year will be the
Masters Category. We plan to exhibit some of Nancy Odom’s
quilts in this category along with entries by anyone else that
qualifies and is willing to exhibit quilts for exhibit only in
our show. We are excited about this new opportunity to show
quilts made by our featured guest artist as well as other
well-known quilters in the region.
So that’s a sneak peak at the most recent improvements to our
Quilt Show. We are always looking for ways to provide the best
possible experience for each person who enters a quilt or
attends the show. So we hope you mark the dates of Tuesday,
April 28 – Sunday, May 3 on your calendar and plan to attend and
participate!
Shop Hop
Review
We had lots of fun being pirates during the Treasure Quest OH-MI
Shop Hop. Even though the weather wasn’t great, over 300 people
still participated in the fun. Five smaller busses of around 25
people each started the journey from various locations in Ohio
and Michigan and provided transportation for those who didn’t
want to drive. The smaller busses were easy to accommodate in
the shops without overcrowding or long lines.
The 2009 Progressive Shop Hop quilt is named Geese in the Stars
and measures 60" x 60" when completed. This eye-catching quilt
could easily be enlarged into a bed quilt with the addition of a
few borders. For those of you who didn’t pick up the kits in
each shop or if you were not able to go on the shop hop, we will
have a few full kits for the 60” quilt available for purchase at
Threads of Tradition. We also have extra yardage of three
fabrics for borders or backings.
On March 9 the shop owners will be meeting to draw the winners
of the shop hop prizes, so you could be getting a call if you
made it to all the shops! At Threads of Tradition, we provided a
daily door prize for shop hoppers who visited us. The winners
are…..
Marcia Storrer of Morenci, MI won a Mini Iron II, the Adapter
set.
Lori Brant of Monroe, MI won a Fons and Porter Quilters Variety
Pin Pack and
The Big Block, Big Quilts book.
Rayanne Lesinski of Garden City, MI won a Mini Iron II the
Adapter set.
Bonnie Zuvers of Morenci, MI won an extra large Donna Sharp tote
bag.
Congratulations to these door prize winners and we hope you
enjoy your prizes!
Saturday Sampler
Reunion
On February 14, the morning of the Saturday
Sampler reunion, either many of you were busy preparing for your
Valentine’s Day celebration or the rather nasty weather kept you
at home. Either way, if you would like to see all the photos of
the quilts that were shown that day, you can connect to our
website at:
http://www.saudervillage.org/Hospitality/SatSampler.asp to
see the 12 beautiful quilts that were displayed.
Congratulations to Pat Lees, Patty Gray, Gwen
Kruse, Sheri Wagoner, Gail Wiyrick, Lida Sponsler, Kathy Day,
Linda Stuckey and Mary Lou Thomas on completing these beautiful
and unique sampler quilts!
Fabric
News Flash - Get Yours While It's Hot!
In preparation for Quilt Show and the
upcoming
season, lots of new fabric continues to make its way into our
shop. The newest arrivals include Moda’s Harmony fabric line
with large and small scale prints, paisley, florals and tiny
print coordinates in traditional colors of red, blue, green, tan
and black. The Summer’s Nights pattern shown here is designed by
Jan Patek using Harmony fabrics.
All That Jazz by Windham reflects the soul of jazz music.
Colorful swirls surround jazz instruments on a black background
in the primary print. Coordinates include spirals of tan and
gold music notes on a black background, a teal mosaic print,
retro-looking squares and others. All in all, an eye catching,
attractive fabric group with lots of possibilities.
Cat’s Secret Garden by P&B Fabrics is sure to tug at the
heartstrings of cat lovers. Cats at play, butterflies and a wavy
stripe that represents the vegetation of the garden combine for
a contemporary look.
RJR Fabric artists have done an outstanding job with the
coloration of their new St. James fabric group. Various scales
of floral prints in black, gold and green, an ombre stripe, a
border stripe and interesting coordinates make up this classy
group of seven fabrics.

Lately, the best children’s quilt fabrics have been designed by
Andover. First they brought us Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry
Caterpillar, which was very popular. Fabric representing the art
in his children’s book Brown Bear Brown Bear is now available.
Two patterns have been designed for the Brown Bear fabrics. The
one we show can be downloaded from Andover’s website:
http://www.andoverfabrics.com/QuiltDesigns/BrownBear.pdf
Another pattern for this fabric has been
published in the March/April issue of Fons and Porters Love of
Quilting magazine. If you do not subscribe to the magazine but
want this pattern, we have copies in the shop. Either one would
make a fun children’s quilt, especially if you know children who
love Eric Carle’s books.
Alpha Buddies is a bright, fun children’s
quilt designed by Nancy Davis Murty for Andover fabrics. We are
currently sewing our sample of this charming way to learn the
alphabet. Each square in the panel represents one letter of the
alphabet and pictures an animal whose name begins with that
letter. Set together with the bright square in a square blocks
it can also be used as an I Spy quilt as well as a feast of
color for little eyes. Kits for this quilt top are available at
Threads of Tradition or patterns can be downloaded from
http://www.andoverfabrics.com/QuiltDesigns/AlphaBuddies.pdf

ornaments or sachets
- and they make great presents too!
The popular Bento Box pattern gets a fabulous makeover in
this updated and expanded version! Four additional pages include
12 new quilt top designs, cutting instructions for 3”, 4.5”, 6”
and 9” blocks in addition to the original 7.5” blocks, and hints
on how to choose the most effective fabrics for your quilt.
Schnibbles by Miss Rosie’s Quilt Company are a line of
patterns for small quilts using mostly charm squares combined
with some coordinating yardage. We are currently stocking six
different patterns from this company and, for your convenience,
we are in the process of cutting charm squares to coordinate
with the requirements for each of these patterns. Each charm
square package will be labeled with the name of the quilt to
which they coordinate, but of course you can use them for other
quilts as well. Prices vary according to the number of charm
squares in each package. Be sure to check out the selection next
time you are in the shop!

Everyone

Some people are lucky enough to own beautiful heirloom quilts
that were passed down through the family. The rest of us have to
be content with making those eye-popping quilts ourselves! Now
we can, with Link to the ‘30’s Making the Quilts We didn’t
Inherit, a fantastic collection of nine authentic 1930’s
patterns made using reproduction fabrics. The projects feature a
range of skill levels and techniques and are ideal for
showcasing your talent and your fabric collection.
A few years ago Jan Krentz was our guest artist at Quilt Fair
and taught her Lone Star technique. Her new book, Quick Star
Quilts and Beyond includes 20 dazzling projects and is full
of her classroom-tested techniques. These star quilts are simply
spectacular and require no fussing with tiny pieces! Large scale
quilts go together fast with Jan’s timesaving methods.
Turning Twenty, Simply Sashed is book 5 in the popular
Turning Twenty series and includes four new designs. Optional
size charts for each quilt are included. Best of all, it is
still fast, still easy and still fun!
Since babies don’t stay babies very long, in their new book
Those Crazy Kids, the designers at Buggy Barn have tried to
give you quilts that your babies can grow up with, as well as
ones that you can finish before they are teenagers! Treasure
those “crazy kids” while you have them since they won’t be kids
for long!

Happy Quilting,
Linda
