Dear Quilting Friends,

When you receive this newsletter, the OH-MI Shop Hop will be in full swing. Hopefully many of you have purchased passports and plan to enjoy a day or two of shop hopping. If you are reading this on Friday, February 26 you can still decide to join the fun and purchase your passport at the first shop you visit today or Saturday. For more details and to see a list of the participating shops visit our website at http://www.saudervillage.org/Shopping/quiltshop.asp#Events.

We’re hoping to see all of you this weekend - look for Threads of Tradition staff and volunteers in garden party hats, scarves and lace collars!

Civil War Tribute Block of the Month

Your response to this special Civil War Block of the Month, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War has been so fantastic that we have again ordered more patterns and fabric to fill the demand. While we were ordering, we decided to buy extra so that more of you could still decide to participate in the experience of making this queen size historical quilt. Still available are three packets of the first two kits and the third block will be available anytime after March 1st. So if you would still like to join this enterprising group, let us know as soon as possible and we will be happy to get you started. If you love history and reproduction quilts, this is the block of the month for you! For more information, give us a call or stop in the shop.

2010 Quilt Show

If you haven’t had a chance to go online to check out the details of our 2010 quilt show, please make time to do so very soon. There is a waiting list for the Thursday and Friday classes with Sharon Schamber, but there is still room for a few more students in the Wednesday and Saturday workshops. Don’t miss out on this special opportunity! The registration form is available online at https://www.saudervillage.org/Online_Registrations/MemberSelection.asp?FRM=4. Any workshop with Sharon is sure to be an exciting and worthwhile experience because she will share unique techniques she has developed to make your quiltmaking even more beautiful and precise.

While online, be sure to consider entering a quilt into the show. Over 200 quilts are already pre-registered, so don’t procrastinate or the show may suddenly fill before you have entered your prized work. Every year, because of space limitations, we must turn away wonderful quilts and that is not something we want to happen to our Current Threads loyal readers and friends. Registering online is easy at http://www.saudervillage.org/Creativity/QS_ex_formonline.asp.

2010 Quilt Show Challenge

Lately, I have talked with many of you who are designing Small Matters Challenge quilts for the 2010 show. Some of you are requesting more fabric as your designs come to life, but others have asked good questions about the challenge criteria. I’m including some of those questions and answers in this newsletter so that everyone has access to the same information. Hopefully you will find this information helpful in the design process. If you know someone who is designing a challenge quilt and is not on the Current Threads mailing list, thank you for passing this information on to them. The design criteria for the Small Matters Challenge says:

“Each entrant will create a quilt design sewn entirely with pieced and/or appliqué blocks measuring 5 inches or less. Blocks may be set block-to-block, alternate block, on point, in a strippy or row set, medallion-style, sampler or in any manner of the artist’s choosing.”

Frequently asked questions:

1. Can I add a border that is not made with 5” or smaller blocks to my Small Matters Challenge quilt?

Answer: While the criteria does say that the entire quilt top must be sewn with blocks 5” or less, it was not our intention to rule out an unpieced border. The simple answer is yes, you may add an unpieced border if that is your desire. An unpieced border will not disqualify you from the competition, but quilts that incorporate 5” blocks in the entire quilt, including the border, may have an advantage in the judges eyes.

2. May I use sashing between the blocks in my quilt?

Answer: Yes, sashing may be used between the blocks of your challenge quilt. Sashings would most likely be needed for strippy or row set quilts and may also be used between blocks if desired.

3. If I want to design a medallion style quilt, can I set the center portion on point and use large triangles around the medallion to make it square?

Answer: Large setting triangles may not be used without violating the essence of the design challenge. If you want to create a medallion style quilt, you can either set the medallion square, or use 5” or less pieced or appliqué blocks to create the setting triangles. As noted in question #2, a sashing may be used to set the medallion apart from the rest of the quilt design.

If you have other questions about the Small Matters Challenge, please feel free to call us at 419-445-9610 or contact us via email at lrufenacht@saudervilage.org and we will do our best to clear up any misunderstanding. I’m anxious to see all of your good work - in my opinion, the challenge is the most exciting category in the show!

Fabulous Fabric and Quilts

Perfect for horse lovers everywhere, Running Free is an eye-catching wall hanging that could be enlarged into a lap or bed size quilt. The pattern is free at the South Sea Imports website or in the kits that we have assembled for you. The pattern also includes instructions to make a “Quillow” from these fabrics. In case you haven’t heard of a quillow, it is a small quilt that has a pillow pocket sewn to it so that you can fold up the quilt, tuck it into the attached pocket and use it as a pillow! Clever idea!

Just in time to celebrate the new Alice in Wonderland movie, Windham has created the Adventures in Wonderland fabric collection (pictured right) used in a fun pattern called “Things Don’t Always Seem as They Appear”. Kits are available to sew this striking 50” x 50” quilt.

Other new fabrics that will stimulate your creativity include Beach House by Robyn Pandolph and RJR fabrics, Oz, Boutique and Nautical and Nice by Moda, Whimsy which is Moda’s version of a “minkee”style fabric in three luscious new colors: beach, buttercup and red coral, as well as new decorator weight fabrics by Amy Butler.

New Spring Purse Designs

We purchase our selection of purses from Donna Sharp, and her designs get better every year. Three new color combinations are available for spring 2010 and include Oxford, a black and white patchwork combination, Rosemary Patch in pinks, greens and golds with a hint of sparkle, and Denim Patch, sewn from a variety of denims with fun striped linings. Look for the new zipped wallet - a great new style in every color!

Books and Patterns - Stir Up Your Creativity!

We’ve purchased dozens of new titles from many talented designers, but due to space limitations, I can only mention a few in this newsletter - you’ll just have to spend some time browsing our book and pattern shelves to see the rest!

Judy Martin is well known for her fabulous quilts, and her new book Stellar Quilts will not disappoint you. Stars have a mystery and grandeur about them that make them perfect focal points for quilts. Stellar Quilts is a book about star quilts, but it is also a book about exceptional quilts. That is not to say that they are all masterpiece quilts that are beyond the reach of the average quilter. Most are easier to make than they appear and all stand out as original designs that will inspire you with their fresh setting ideas, unique blocks, handsome borders or elegant quilting.

Turn those enticing little packs of precut strips, squares and triangles into fun and fabulous quilts with the help of Jelly Roll Quilts and More. Ten quilts plus four one-block wonders will entice you to dig right into these fabric treats! Alternate yardage requirements are given so you can do your own cutting if your prefer.

Find twelve months of fun, fusible, seasonal wall quilts, all in one package. Kim Schaefer’s Calendar Quilts are quick and easy - make one for yourself and more for gifts. Transferring appliqué designs is a snap with this handy package of full-sized patterns. In each design, darling images combine piecing with fusible appliqué - make one for each month of the year!

Another dazzling pattern is In a Pickle from Larissa Key Designs. This stunning and versatile paper-pieced quilt will catch your eye and capture your heart. Directions are given for two sizes, either a wall/lap quilt or a queen bed quilt. Both the background and the accent colors are scrappy, making this a great project to use up your stash and impress your friends in the process!

Three new popular bags and purse patterns are now available at Threads of Tradition. Be sure to check out Amy Butler’s Sweet Harmony, the best-seller Two Hour Tulip Purse, and a drawstring Jewelry Bag made from two fat quarters that also doubles as a sewing or quilting kit.

Of course, we can’t forget the babies! New selections for the littlest joys of our lives include Baby Puzzle Ball and Rag Tag Baby - a textured blanket with silky ribbon tags for touching and feeling. Owls are a popular nursery theme this year and Hooterville, our newest baby quilt pattern features appliqué owls and trees to complete that trendy nursery theme.

Hopefully all these new ideas have renewed your spirit and inspired desire to do something creative while the snow is still flying outside. Now if only I could provide you (and me too) the time to create everything our minds and hearts wish we could do!

Keep on quilting, Linda
