Dear Quilting Friends,
The Sauder Village 2007 Quilt Fair is
now history and I hope you were all able to come and participate
in making it a memorable event! Four hundred and twelve beautiful
quilts were hung in Founder’s Hall. The variety, quality and
number of quilts that arrive each year is always an inspiration
to
me as well as to the thousands of people who visit the show.
The judges had the difficult task of
examining all these beautiful quilts and deciding which ones were
most worthy of a ribbon. While the top three awards are shown
here, the complete winners list is available on our website at:

Everyone
loved Louisa Smith and her workshops on Bargello, One Patch
Plus and Strips and Curves. Her high energy level, concern for
each student and sense of humor kept everyone motivated and
allowed each person’s creativity to blossom. The pictures show
some of the class participants having fun while
creating their own unique masterpieces.
This is an annual event, so mark your
calendars now for the 2008 Quilt Fair to be held Tuesday,
April 29th – Sunday, May 4th. Sharyn
Craig will be our special guest and will be teaching workshops
at the Heritage Inn. All the detailed information for Quilt Fair
2008 will be available on our website by December 1, 2007.

Every
year the Sauder Village Challenge draws a lot of attention from
show attendees. It is always so inspiring to see the evidence of
great creativity from our quilting friends. The variety of quilts
that emerge from numerous quilters beginning with the same group
of fabrics and design parameters is truly amazing. The
Challenge for 2008 is named “Do A Double Take”. Challenge
fabric packets containing Paula Nadelstern’s Opulence fabrics are
now available at Threads of Tradition. Purchase your fabric kit so
it can stimulate your creative juices - we’d love to see your
entry in the challenge next year!
“Dedicated
the Excellence” the special exhibit of quilts made by
long-time Sauder Village volunteers, Lorraine Wyse and Evelyn
Nafziger will remain on display through Sunday, June 3. The quilts
on display are just a few of the many quilts these two dedicated
quilters have stitched over the years.
After
just a few more days of quilting, our Bear Tracks in the Garden
quilt will be ready to come out of the quilting frame. This
very striking quilt would be wonderful in a variety of colors, but
we have chosen a blue and purple color scheme for our
version. Kits are available at Threads of Tradition, or patterns
are also available if you prefer to select your own colors.
Upcoming
Quilt Events...
The months just seem to fly by, so when you
are flipping the pages of your calendar, remember to save Friday
and Saturday, October 19–20, 2007 for our Fall Quilter’s
Retreat at the Heritage Inn. The relaxed format will include
lots of time for sewing on one or several projects of your choice,
plus door prizes, demonstrations, good food and lots of fun with
other passionate quilters. More details will follow as the time
draws near.
Another opportunity for fun and learning will
be available on September 17-21 as
Anita Shackelford and Sharon Stroud present A Quilters'
Retreat at Sauder Village.
You are invited to join Anita and Sharon for
a time of instruction and relaxation at Historic Sauder Village and Heritage Inn.
Together, Anita and Sharon are beginning
their fifth year of presenting retreats. They’ve had great success
in New York and are looking forward to bringing some of this fun
to Ohio. Sharon is a talented and enthusiastic teacher with a huge
following in central and upstate New York. She is also well known
as the author of Dresden Plates of Distinction, published
by AQS. Working together, they can cover most everything, from
hand and machine piecing to appliqué, personalized design, and
finishing techniques. Learn more about Sharon at
www.sharonstroud.com
The
special project for this retreat will be both pieced and
appliquéd, and set together strippie style. Pieced blocks include
star and basket patterns and the appliqué will be designed to fit
the mood of your quilt. They will help you figure yardage and set
your quilt together as a wall quilt, lap quilt or bed quilt.
Working in the beautiful Heritage Inn, you can sew all day,
interrupted only by delicious meals. There will be evening
programs, door prizes, lots of fun and laughter.

New Fabric
Arrivals

Pamela Mostek has designed a fun new summer group of fabrics
called Jasmine, for Clothworks fabrics. The large scale
floral sets the tone with bright aqua, yellow and lime as the
primary colors. A smaller scale floral, a tone on tone and a
wiggly stripe complete this happy group of fabrics, just right for
summer quilts or clothing.
Classic
blue and white creates a cool and calm feeling in this new
collection by Tim Coffey for Timeless Treasures fabrics. Aptly
named “Porcelain” the Designer’s Quarters magazine has
printed a pattern called Porcelain Stars. You can see the quilt
top at Threads of Tradition and we also have kits available so all
blue and white lovers can quickly stitch and enjoy this beautiful
quilt.
Books &
Gadgets
Whether
you are just getting started in appliqué or are experienced and
want to improve your techniques, Janet Pittman has written
Appliqué, the basics and beyond with you in mind. In 144
spiral bound pages with more than 550 full-color photographs and
illustrations, you’ll have essential information on equipment and
supplies, preparing appliqué, stitching and embellishing, 16 full
size pattern groups for mixing and matching and 23 Notebooks with
essential how-to information for easy reference. Step-by-step
photographs illustrate each preparation technique and clear how-to
photographs of stitching details make this new book a fantastic
reference for anyone interested in appliqué work.
Another
new reference book is The Quilter’s Directory of Embellishments
by Sally Holman. Add wonderful color and textured
detail to your quilting projects with this comprehensive guide to
over 30 embellishing techniques, from using braid and embroidery
to adding beaded motifs and mirrored decorations. Discover
creative new ways to use everyday treasures and trinkets such as
charms, buttons, beads and shells, or produce stunning surface
effects with couching, weaving, and raised appliqué and much more.
By
the time most quilters get to the binding stage, we are already
mindfully planning our next project. Therefore, we want an easy
way to complete the binding with no hassles. The Binding Gizmo
is a reference book with a binding tool that includes easy to
follow instructions and illustrations for every step of the
binding process. The book helps calculate how much binding your
quilt will require and the yardage needed. The tool provides
absolutely
accurate measuring and cutting for no more miscut angles or short
bindings with perfect bias seams and no more mistakes! Easily
connect your binding strips end-to-end with perfectly mitered
corners every time.
Every season is gift-giving season, so we have recently ordered
quite a few new Jim Shore figurines. They will continue to
arrive throughout the summer, to delight collectors and quilters
alike. This newly arrived snowman may be out of season, but he
certainly is adorable!

As the weather warms and beckons us outdoors,
I hope you will decide to take a road trip and visit Sauder
Village this summer. If you made a purchase at Threads of
Tradition during Quilt Fair, you have a discount coupon to use
before the end of June, so that alone is a good reason for you to
visit us again! We’ll have plenty of new fabrics and ideas to
share with you when you come. I hope to see you soon
Keep on stitching! Linda
