Dear Quilting Friends,
Glora Belle and I have returned from Quilt
Market in Houston and are busy including all our new ideas into
the shop. We are afraid the rest of the staff isn’t going to want
us to go back next year, since upon our return we start
rearranging the shop and ask them to help us move large quantities
of fabric. Everything just looks so fresh and new when you mix it
up a bit!
In addition to seeing and ordering lots of
new fabric for the coming year, we met some of the designers whose
names you may recognize. To name just a few, I took a class from Kaffe Fassett, Glora Belle attended a session with Harriet
Hargrave and we both had our picture taken with Amy Butler in her
booth. We were on the same flight as Bethany Reynolds and Kaye
Wood and crossed paths with them in the baggage claim in the
Houston airport. All that just to say that most of the big names
in quilting were at Market, promoting their new products and it is
fun to meet the designers who dream up the products we use and
sell.
It was very apparent at Market that going
“green” has made its way into the quilting world. Batting made
from renewable resources like corn and bamboo were introduced, as
well as organic cotton fabrics by Michael Miller. At Prairie’s
Edge Patchworks (a pattern company), I picked up a flyer with the
following interesting rationale for quilt making.
Go Green! Or Save Energy... Make a Quilt!
We all need to conserve energy and try to be
as green as possible. Here are a few hints to entice us to do our
share to save the planet.
·
By lowering your nighttime thermostat 5 to 10
degrees, you will save up to 20% on your heating bill in a year.
·
Studies by New York Cornell Medical Center have
discovered that a room 60-65 degrees will aid sleep. So making a
quilt will allow you to drop the night-time temperature slightly
lower than that since the quilt will keep the body temperature
closer to the 60-65 target.
·
The National Sleep Foundation states that a hot dry
room increases sleeplessness. Also, they say that making the room
inviting for sleep will help you fall asleep. Nothing is more
inviting than a pretty, cuddly quilt!
In addition to helping us to save our planet,
quilts can bring people together. One of the most amazing and
impressive quilt projects ever put together, the massive “Quilt of
Belonging” made a special appearance at Quilt Market. The entire
quilt measures 10 ½ feet high and 120 feet long. It features 263
handmade textile art blocks representing every nationality on the
planet as well as all of Canada’s First Peoples. Artists and
groups from all over the great white north including Victoria and
Newfoundland to the Artic Circle participated in its construction.
The Quilt of Belonging is a stunning textile art project that
shows there is a place for all in the fabric of society,
recognizing our diversity while celebrating our common
humanity. For more information on the Quilt of Belonging, visit

Notions
You've
probably seen advertisements for the hottest selling new sewing
gadget--the Sidewinder by Wrights. It is a portable bobbin winder
that is free-standing, compact and runs on either a power cord or
batteries. Stop in the shop and run our demonstrator to see that
using the Sidewinder is easy as 1-2-3! Put the thread on the
spindle, wind the thread to the bobbin and push the button to
start. Never unthread your machine to wind a bobbin again! We
still have a few in stock and more on order but at $29.99 they are
selling fast so don't delay checking out this very handy gadget!
Retreating
for Fun!
On October 19-20, twenty-four
dedicated quilters relaxed and sewed to their heart's content at
the Sauder Village Quilter's Retreat. Planned by Threads of
Tradition staff, these events include lots of sewing time, fun and
inspiring interaction with other quilters, demonstrations of
quilting techniques, after-hours shopping at Threads of Tradition,
door prizes and meals. Retreats are available in both the spring
and the fall and are held at the beautiful Sauder Heritage Inn.
We had so much fun at our first two
retreats that we have decided to expand next year’s events to
three days instead of two! The next available retreat dates are
March 14-15-16 and October 3-4-5, 2008. Mark your
calendars now to save these dates to experience the fun of sewing
together. We’d love to have you join us! Pictures are never the
same as being there, but selected photos from the October retreat
are available at:
