Rates. Dates & Hours

Dear Quilting Friends,

I just returned from a long weekend in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. The impetus for the trip was to attend a wedding, but it was also a great reason to spend a few days with good friends who live in the area. We had a great time at the wedding and also playing tourist in Amish country and at Hershey’s Chocolate Town. I visited a couple of quilt shops but the most exciting thing I learned is that I can hand quilt while riding in the car! I have never been able to read in a moving car, but I found I’m able to hand quilt for hours on end. So, I quilted most of the table runner sample for my upcoming class and that helped the hours fly by!

Speaking of traveling and visiting quilt shops, the latest issue of Quilt Sampler magazine is here! This magazine comes out twice a year and always features ten quilt shops and includes a specially designed quilt project from each shop. Whether you use the magazine to travel to the shops in person or to “visit” them from the comfort of your recliner, this special issue is always a delight to read. They usually sell quickly, so pick up a copy soon.

The demand for Best Press Starch was so great that the company couldn’t keep up with orders and many shops, including us, were unable to keep it in stock. We have just received a large shipment and have the Lavendar and Caribbean Beach scents in stock, so try one or both. This new product really is much better than any other starch I have used and I keep it within reach on my ironing board whether I am ironing clothes or pressing quilt fabrics.

Many of you have tried the new Clover Yo-Yo makers and have loved them. In addition to using the yo-yos for embellishing, we now have two new animal patterns that use yo-yos to form the animal’s legs. Both Yo-Yo Bear and Puppy Love by Indigo Junction would make excellent gifts for children or cute decorative accents in your home. Remember to use the Clover yo-yo makers to speed up the sewing process.

Retreat

This is the last month I will be able to remind you about registering for the Sauder Village Quilter’s Retreat to be held at Sauder Heritage Inn on October 19-20. There are still a few tables that have not been reserved, so register soon if you would like to participate. If you are like me, you could use some uninterrupted sewing time to finish your UFO’s while enjoying the company of other dedicated quilters. Bring your quilting friends and let us take care of all the details. Registration fee of $85.00 includes: six foot table space with chair, power cords to each table, shared ironing boards and irons, goody bag, door prizes and three meals. Registration forms online at the website: http://www.saudervillage.org/Hospitality/Quilt_Retreat_Reg.asp or call Jan Nofziger at 800.590.9755.

Just for Fun

Someone gave me the following list and just for fun, I thought I would share it with you. I think we can all identify with the author and at least some of her ideas!

15 Reasons to Buy Fabric...

1. It insulates the closet where it is kept.

2. It is less expensive and more fun than psychiatric care.

3. Because it is on sale.

4. It’s not bad for your health.

5. A yard a day is all the fabric shops of the world recommend to support your habit.

6. I’m participating in a contest - the one with the most fabric wins!

7. It provides extra weight in the trunk of my car for traction on snowy, icy roads.

8. Because I’m worth it.

9. Like dust, it’s good for protecting empty spaces in the house.

10. When the big earthquake comes, all the fabric shops might be swallowed into the ground and never be seen again.

11. Stress from dealing with the Fabric Control Officer (husband) made me do it.

12. Buy it now, before your husband retires and goes with you on all your shopping expeditions.

13. It keeps without refrigeration, you don’t have to cook it to enjoy it, and you never have to feed it, change it, wipe its nose or walk it.

14. It helps the economic recovery. It is our patriotic duty to support cotton farmers, textile mills and fabric shops.

15. It’s not immoral, illegal or fattening. It calms the nerves, gratifies the soul and makes me feel good.

New Fabric Coming!

Now that you have the reasons to buy, do we have fabric for you! With over 3000 bolts in stock and new fabric shipments arriving every week, the choices are almost mind-boggling. Of the latest arrivals, the most unusual for our shop are the very soft fine cotton corduroys in pink, aqua and light green. The pale yellow corduroy should be arriving soon. These fabrics, along with matching woven stripe cottons are intended to be mixed and matched with other baby fabrics.

Also new are a nice variety of wools in great fall colors and textures. Browns, bittersweet, turkey red and autumn green in herringbones and tweeds will add warmth and texture to your next wool appliqué project.

The following three new fabric groups from Moda are scheduled to arrive in September. Shangri La, designed by 3 Sisters, includes prints and woven plaids in combinations of spa blue, soft green and brown to create the feel of a faraway haven or hideaway of idyllic beauty and tranquility. In addition to bolts of fabric, we have also ordered charm packs as well as Market Bags and Tote bags sewn from these fabrics.

Allspice Tapestry by Fig Tree Quilts uses a warm vintage-feeling palette of brown, aqua, pink, caramel and green. Soft images and delicate patterns compliment the florals for a charming, soft and elegant result. All sorts of wonderful vintage quilts could be sewn from this line.

First grade reader vocabulary cards and old-fashioned kids toys inspired Look and Learn. All the fabrics are in clear, honest primary colors right out of the coloring box. A border print with kids and toys, a “toy box” and a scenic print, dots, pin stripes and florals provide lots of variety for making nostalgic quilts for children. American Jane has even designed several patterns using these fabrics as well as old fashioned lace up sewing cards and a learn to sew kit - all of which should be arriving any day.

Gift Ideas

With the holidays just around the corner, we have lots of new gift ideas for quilt lovers on your shopping list. Donna Sharp recently sent us three new styles of purses and also three new patchwork colors. The picture shows the Pauline bag in Spice, the Megan bag in Lincoln Stars, the Mini Hipster in Candy Apple and the Lori bag in Bear Walk. All the new styles, as well as some of the older styles, are available in these new fabrics. Purses and bags continue to be a very popular fashion accessory, and these new designs are selling fast!

Just today we received a huge shipment of Jim Shore figurines. The new items include 3 sizes of Nativity sets, an Amish woman and man - each standing in front of a quilt - a Christmas dog “Bark the Herald Angels Sing”, a cow on a cart and three different musical snow globes. The nativities are beautiful even if you don’t normally collect Jim Shore’s work, and any collector would love to receive any or all of these new figurines and snow globes.

Beautiful quilt journals, postcards to send or frame, variety packs of blank note cards, gift enclosure cards, Christmas cards and magnetic message pads from BBD Creations have also arrived at Threads of Tradition. These cards all feature quilt block designs with high quality, brilliant color printing on delicately speckled matte card stock for a warm handmade feel. Envelopes are made from matching lightly speckled paper. My personal favorites are the Christmas cards; we have several styles in stock that you really must see. Several packages sold before we even had them priced!

With Christmas three months away, there is still time to make handmade, one-of-a-kind gifts for all the special people on your list. With the kids back in school, now is a great time to start a new project or learn a new skill.  Spend some time looking through your books or fabric stash to find the inspiration you need to get going again, or stop in at Threads of Tradition and see what’s new and the samples we’ve been sewing. It just might be the creative spark you need!

                                                                See you soon!   Linda
