The coming of the railroad brought
‘civilization’ to the Black Swamp. As early as the 1850s trains were bringing goods from cities and taking away produce from our farms to be sold elsewhere. Located just two miles north of the Historic Village, the Elmira Depot was in use until 1968. Here,
passengers caught a ride on the Wabash Cannonball, the train that served this depot. In the Baggage Room,
our guests can sort through a mailbag, weigh sacks of ‘grain’ and chart distances on a real railroad map.
