This is a replica of the first schoolhouse built in Fulton County in the mid-1830s. Like many early schools, students sat on puncheon benches facing the windows to take advantage of the light let in by the greased paper. A gourd dipper and a wooden pail sit at the door of the school, which typically held a dozen students. Since they helped on the farm in the spring and fall, many students only came during the winter. Today’s visitors can follow in the footsteps of those early students, sitting on the same benches and learning about the “3 R’s” from our costumed volunteer teacher.
