34rd Annual Quilt Show to Kick-Off Historic Village 2010 Season

Archbold, OH - For the past 34 years, Sauder Village has celebrated the fine craftsmanship of quilters from throughout the Midwest at the annual Quilt Show in Founder’s Hall. From Tuesday, April 27 through Sunday, May 2, quilters from across the country will travel to Archbold to enjoy a magnificent display of more than 400 quilts, unique demonstrations and special workshops.

“Again this year we look forward to showcasing a wide variety of bed, wall and contemporary art quilts as well as miniature, youth and baby quilts at our annual Quilt Show, ” shared Linda Rufenacht, manager of Threads of Tradition Quilt Shop at Sauder Village. “Whether you are an accomplished quilter or just have an appreciation for fine craftsmanship – this is one show you won’t want to miss!”

During the six-day Quilt Show at Sauder Village, both traditional and modern interpretations of quilts will be represented. Each year the show is a new experience since once a quilt has been exhibited it cannot be re-entered into the Sauder Village show. With categories ranging from pieced, appliqué and mixed technique to contemporary art, masters, baby, miniatures and youth quilts - guests are sure to enjoy browsing the variety of quilts this annual event has to offer.
Other highlights of the popular event include live piano music and quilting demonstrations. Throughout the week, many quilters will volunteer their time to share their love of quilting with guests. Some of the demonstrations scheduled throughout the week include hand quilting, piecing Kyoto Gardens, hand appliqué and paper piecing a Double Wedding Ring table runner. Other demonstrations include t-shirts gone crazy, raw edge appliqué and fabric design. There will also be antique quilts on display in many of the homes in the Historic Village to help celebrate this special event.

Another popular element of this event is the annual Quilt Challenge. This year’s theme is “Small Matters.” Starting a year ago, entrants purchased a challenge packet and were given the challenge to take those fabrics and create a quilt design sewn entirely with pieced and/or appliqué blocks measuring 5 inches or less. The blocks can be set in any manner of the artist’s choosing and must be quilted either by hand or machine. Always a crowd favorite, this spectacular display will include more than 30 unique challenge quilts in the lobby of Founder’s Hall.

As part of the Quilt Show, Sauder Village always brings in leaders in the field and this year’s guest artist is no exception. This year’s special guest is quilt designer, author and teacher Sharon Schamber of Payson, AZ. Sharon started sewing when she was six years old and at the age of twelve started buying clothes from Goodwill so she could take them apart and then sew them together again. For many years she designed and made bridal and pageant wear and since 1994 has devoted her energies to designing and making award-winning quilts. Sharon received the Best of Show award at the 2005 Houston International Quilt Festival with her magnificent quilt "Scarlet Serenade". Her "Sedona Rose" quilt won Best of Show at the 2006 AQS Show in Paducah and her "Flower of Life" won Best of Show 2007-- the first quilter to win the top award two years in a row! Sharon was recently awarded the title of Master Quilter from the National Quilting Association. She hopes to continue to inspire her students through both her teaching and her new creations.

Sharon will be sharing her expertise at a number of workshops throughout the Quilt Show at Sauder Village. A limited number of workshop spaces are still available. For a detailed list of class offerings during the Quilt Show visit www.saudervillage.org or call 800.590.9755.

For those with a passion for quilting that extends beyond the week-long show, Sauder Village offers a wide range of classes in quilting throughout the year. Threads of Tradition Quilt Shop at Sauder Village, open year round, is recognized as one of the most extensive quilting shops in the area with supplies, books and more than 3500 bolts of fabric.

The Sauder Village Quilt Show runs Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. A special “Exhibit Only” admission pass is available for the annual Quilt Show for $10.00. The admission price for the Quilt Show and Historic Village is only $14.50 for adults and $7.50 for students ages 6-16. And again this year, children 16 and under are free every Sunday this season!
